MUNICH Healthy Eats Travel Guide

Let's be real: I was grieving when I left Berlin. It was my comfy little oasis of plant-based health food. I was nervous I wouldn't find as much in Munich. And honestly, I didn't. But I still found some great spots that helped me grab some much needed nutrients.

Tushita Teehaus is precisely a tea house. With shelves and shelves of loose leaf teas, their menu was extensive. I would have loved to sit with a big pot of warm tea, but I stopped in on a hot afternoon, so I opted for a classic iced matcha almond milk latte. They also had a small little case of some vegan treats, and I just couldn't resist a little slice of this gluten-free chocolate banana almond crusted pie. Both were delicious; not too sweet and just a few simple ingredients.

If you're looking for a spot to sit and chat with a friend over a steaming cup of leaves, or just a place to grab a good pick-me-up to go, Tushita is a cute little organic gem among Munich cafes.

On a day I was feeling the exhaustion of the travel catch up to me, I knew I needed to get my hands on some serious nutrients. And SuperDanke was there for me right when I needed it. It might seem like just a simple storefront on the street, but they squeeze all the goodness they can out of that tiny little space (just like they do with the fruits and vegetables behind the counter). With the yummiest menu of juices and smoothies, I had a hard time picking my order. (Part of that might have been because I didn't understand all the German, but this was on my 11th day in Germany so I had my smoothie ingredients down by that point.) I went with the Hulk- avocado, banana, trauben (grapes!), spinach, agave, chia seeds, sea salt, and rice milk- but I took out the agave because I knew the banana and grape juice would sweeten it enough on its own. And that it did! Such a yummy and creamy cup of all the vitamins I needed.

The Viktualienmarkt is definitely my favorite spot in Munich. Established in 1807 by King Maximilian I as the city's food market, it's now just a massive farmers market. Massive. And loaded with the freshest of foods. I scored some good veggies, a fresh tuna salad, and a fresh juice of paprika, carrot, pineapple, orange and curcumin. Head this way and spend some time pursuing the stands, then sit your scores down at the picnic tables to take in the biergarten tradition.

Bite Delite was also a total win. Tucked inside a modern shopping mall, it's a cute little cafe-style shop. They've got a huge case full of fresh food to grab for the road, but they also have a great menu to sit and enjoy in their little space or outside on the picnic benches. Again in dire need of some serious vitamins, I went with the green-loaded Matcha Bowl- matcha, spinach, avocado, banana, and agave, topped with goji berries, banana, chia seeds and coconut. Again, I passed on the agave, but it was everything I needed to keep me on my game before I boarded a train for Switzerland.

  • Take the U-bahn and S-bahn. Although the U-bahn and S-bahn system isn't as strong here as it is in Berlin, it's still a great way to get around. Get yourself a ticket at any of the stations and run (or ride) wild through the city.
  • The must-do's:
    • Marienplatz for food and shopping
    • The Residenz
    • Dachau Concentration Camp– so hard but an absolute must
    • Hofbrauhaus – if you get the timing right you'll watch cute old German people in traditional dancing
    • The English Garden– the perfect spot to relax between some busy city-traversing
    • Olympiapark

If you're craving that traditional German flair, Munich is full of trees and parks and bikes stuffed inside a city that just screams Bavaria pride. And if you're heading that way, these spots will help fuel you through your visit. xx, molls
